LORE OF THE WASTES
"To the uneducated observer, this world is merely a planetary corpse. But to a man of science, it is a magnificent theater of decay. Observe how the ecosystem digests itself in perfect, putrid harmony. I have compiled these field notes to document its grotesque majesty from a safe, breathable altitude."
— Sir Clancy Fancypants, Chief Naturalist
THE HISTORY OF MEATWORLD
Welcome to the end of the food chain. Five centuries ago, the Earth as we knew it ceased to exist. The biosphere was forced to transition from a world driven by photosynthesis and clean water to an ecosystem fueled entirely by decay, carrion, and marrow. This archive documents the violent chemical reality of our new planet.
THE RAPTURE OF ROT
When the MEAT first consumed the earth some 500 years ago, survivors viewed it through the lens of Revelation—a literal Hell on Earth where the unworthy were left behind. The oceans choked with fat and blood runoff, and traditional aquatic life dissolved. In the decades following the ground zero event, the concept of a loving, omnipotent creator was largely abandoned. The few ancient texts that survived were grossly misunderstood; theological concepts like "the Word became Flesh" were taken literally, viewed not as a miracle, but as the prophetic curse that doomed humanity.
THE CHEMICAL ATMOSPHERE
With a global layer of rotting biomatter, the atmosphere is a volatile, toxic hazard. It is a deadly chemical cocktail produced by the breakdown of proteins and fats.
- Methane: Highly flammable. Traps heat, creating a severe global greenhouse effect.
- Hydrogen Sulfide: Lethally toxic and heavier than air, pooling in low areas like trenches and the Deepgut.
- Cadaverine & Putrescine: General cellular decay that produces the signature, overwhelming stench of the world.
TRIBES OF THE FLESH
Humanity is fractured. Survival in the Meatworld requires entirely new belief systems built around navigating a digestive ecosystem. From the religious zealots in the bone-wastes to the quiet naturalists of the swamps, these are the dominant factions fighting for dominance in the rot.
THE BONEDUSTERS
Religious zealots living in the colossal ribcages of The Maw. They represent the terrifying extreme of religious adaptation. Instead of fighting the hostile environment, they have embraced it as divine, grinding bone into paint and worshipping the central MEAT brain as divinity incarnate. To be digested is to reach Salvation.
THE CRUSTLANDERS
The innovators and pioneers of the sun-baked crust who skin the earth for Terrahide leather. They follow the Doctrine of the Spark, blending humanism and industrial worship. To a Crustlander, the MEAT is not a god or a demon; it is simply unrefined fuel provided by the universe for them to conquer.
THE DEEPGUT DELVERS
Explorers and spelunkers of the highest order, venturing into the darkest tracts of the inner meat. Their religion is tied to discovery; they believe that somewhere deep within the world's biology lies "The Core" or "The Seed". A Deepgut's journal is their prayer book, and they treat cartography as a spiritual duty.
THE SCABKINS
Nomadic warmongers living a brutal existence on the scarred plains. They view the apocalypse as a Great Test to burn away the weak. God is the "Great Adversary," and he doesn't want prayers—he wants to see you fight. They venerate scars as holy scriptures written on the body.
THE SEEP FOLK
The heartbeat of Meatworld. They live in symbiotic harmony with the living bogs, practicing quiet communion and listening to the literal pulse of the planet rather than fighting it. They navigate the acidic, liquid-rot environments and neutralize toxic juices to survive.
THE VANGUARD
The Vanguard are a deeply militaristic faction that views themselves as the last bastion of old-world order, violently rejecting the biological reality of the meatscape. Treating fragmented, ancient military manuals as sacred texts, they mount a zealous crusade to sterilize the rot and uphold pre-apocalypse civilization. Driven by their strict dogma, they stubbornly refuse to adapt to the new world, standing in absolute opposition to the use of fleshy grafting, meat-based technology, and bioweapons.
FAUNA OF THE ROT
One hundred years of global flesh-rot has completely rewritten Earth's evolutionary tree. Pure herbivores and clean-water aquatics starved out immediately, replaced by hyper-scavengers resistant to necrosis and airborne pathogens. This archive catalogues the deadliest mutated creatures surviving in the wastes.
BILE-EELS
Bioluminescent, highly aggressive amphibians that swim through the acidic pools of the Deepgut. Their glowing lures mimic chunks of fresh meat to draw in scavengers before they strike.
BLOAT-LEECHES
Amphibious parasites the size of housecats found in the Seep Swamps. They latch onto larger fauna or unsuspecting humans to siphon vital fluids, dropping off only when they swell to the size of a tire.
CARRION HOUNDS
Feral descendants of wild dogs and wolves. They have lost most of their hair, suffering from permanent mange, but boast incredibly high bite-forces to crush through bone. They are pack hunters that relentlessly track the scent of fresh blood across the General Rot.
CHUCKADOONS
Large, stubborn beasts of burden utilized by Crustlanders for transport and hauling. They are skittish creatures prone to stampeding if spooked by predators or sudden commotions.
DOOM MAGGOTS
Massive, flesh-ripping maggots—often half a meter wide or more—that hunt in ferocious swarms. They are capable of chewing rapidly through thick tissue walls and subterranean tunnel systems.
GOLLYWORMS
Frightening, thick, blind worms native to the deep Rot. They hunt in packs and are known to swarm and burrow directly into the throats and stomachs of unwary victims.
GORE-GATORS
Descendants of crocodilians that lost their scales in favor of thick, leathery, chemical-resistant hides. They ambush prey from beneath the surface of the Seep Swamps, entirely blind but hunting via vibrations in the sludge.
HELLWORMS
Colossal Deepgut predators comprised of translucent, sickly-white segments easily eight feet in diameter. Instead of a traditional jaw, their head features a rotating halo of jagged, rusted rebar and splintered bone to devour anything in their path.
JERKY-RATS
Hairless rodents with iron-dense, constantly growing incisors capable of chewing through sun-baked muscle. They travel in massive swarms and extract all their necessary hydration directly from the blood of whatever they kill.
MARROW-CROWS
Large, vulture-like descendants of corvids that lack feathers on their heads to avoid infection when scavenging. Highly intelligent, they drop jagged bone-shards from high altitudes to crack open tough crusts or injure prey.
MARROW TICKS
Giant, blind insects with fat, engorged abdomens that swarm through the cavernous organ tunnels. They screech loudly as they launch themselves through the air, latching onto prey with sharp mandibles.
ROTWILDERS
Vicious predators of the wastes, often kept by unsavory locals (like Madame Dawsy) as terrifying guard animals or executioners.
SCAB-SCORPIONS
Massive, heavily armored arachnids that burrow through dried flesh in the Crustlands. Their stingers inject a digestive enzyme that liquifies the tough crust—or their prey—so they can drink it.
GOLIATH TAPEWORMS
What used to be microscopic parasites have thrived in the Deepgut, growing into massive, blind, segmented horrors that tunnel through the organ walls.
THE GEOGRAPHY OF ROT
The Churn (or "The Runny"): The general term for the unstable, active, wet, and squishy flesh ground of the Meatworld. It is a living, shifting landscape that forces survivors to constantly move.
Derma-shale / The Crustlands: The sun-baked, dehydrated outer "skin" of the world. This leathery desert is the only stable ground, where the Crustlanders build their boomtowns and harvest "Terrahide".
The Seep (or Slurry Swamps): The toxic, liquid-rot bogs of the Meatworld. Highly dangerous, deeply acidic, and home to the Seepfolk, who have learned to harmonize with its harsh, psychedelic ecology.
The Deepgut (The Organ Underworld): The subterranean labyrinth of twisting tunnels, cavernous organs, and beating valves. It is mined by the Deepgut Delvers for resources like bone marrow and calcium pearls.
The Maw: The colossal, bone-bleached sink at the south pole of the planet where the moving conveyor-belt of land is ultimately swallowed and digested.
CRUSTLANDER SLANG & TITLES
Hardback: The Crustland term for a toughened pioneer, scout, or outrider (like the members of Kade's posse).
Skive: The everyday, blue-collar slang for clothing or finished leather made from harvested Meatworld skin (Terrahide).
Carnager: The highest-ranking law enforcer and military commander in a Crustland settlement. They are the "butchers" who make the hard, sweeping cuts to keep the peace.
Ransetter: A mid-level officer or second-in-command to a Carnager (e.g., Ransetter Blain). They literally "set the ranks" and enforce the borders of the law.
The Cauterie / The Trust: The wealthy, oligarchical governing body of the Crustlands, made up of elite monopoly owners called "Trustees" or "Saltriarchs".
WASTELAND IDIOMS
"Chew the gristle": The Meatworld equivalent of "bite the bullet." It means to endure a tough, painful, or unpleasant situation because you have no other choice.
"Bone-held": A deep expression of gratitude. It replaces "much obliged" and means your debt to a person goes all the way to your skeleton.
"Salt or squirm": The ultimate Crustland dichotomy. Either the meat gets salted and preserved, or the maggots (the squirm) get it. It means "win or lose" or "no matter what happens".
"A marrow-tick in a pulse-keg": A catastrophic "fox in the henhouse" scenario. It means a greedy, lethal parasite has been left unguarded with a community's most vital, valuable resources.
"Cut it thick or thin": The equivalent of "no matter how you slice it." It means you can look at the situation from any angle you want, but the end result is exactly the same.
"Down to the gristle": When a situation is dire. All the easy ways out are gone, and you are left with nothing but painful, desperate choices.
"Bedding the blowfly": To invite a deep, intimate betrayal. If you bed the blowfly, you are bringing the very source of the rot and infection into your own home or camp.
SCABKIN DIALECT
Gah: A guttural exclamation of frustration or disgust. (A degraded, non-religious evolution of "God").
Pinkay (or Pinkah): A highly derogatory term for a Crustlander, usually aimed at females (referencing their soft, un-calloused, "pink" skin compared to a Scabkin).
Reck: To remember, or to think.
Itchofit: A compression of "The itch of it." It means the core issue, the irritating bottom line, or the raw, uncomfortable truth of a situation stripped of all fluff.
Hole Feast: The true meaning of life from a Scabkin’s nihilistic perspective. It means that at the end of the day, everything is just going to be swallowed by the great Maw anyway, so live brutally in the present.
THE ECOLOGY OF DECAY
The Squirm: The catch-all term for the maggots, gollyworms, and flesh-eating parasites that immediately infest anything dead or dying on the surface.
Grafting: The highly specialized skill of fusing inorganic Old-World technology (wires, gears, engines) directly with living Meatworld tissue.
Bonegrit: The dangerous, suffocating dust of the Crustland wastes, made of pulverized fingernails, hair, dried skin cells, and bone fragments. Storms of this material are highly lethal.
